Casper test FAQ

The Casper test is an online situational judgement test run by Acuity Insights. Admissions teams in medicine, nursing, teaching and other fields use it to see how you handle ethical and interpersonal situations. The standard test has 11 scenarios: 4 you answer by video and 7 you answer in writing. It doesn't test clinical or subject knowledge. In Australia, the RACGP uses it as its National Entry Assessment for GP training.

Acuity's standard Casper test takes about 65 to 85 minutes, including optional breaks. You answer 4 video scenarios, with 1 minute to record each answer. Then you answer 7 typed scenarios, with 3 minutes 30 seconds for both answers in each. Some Australian teacher education programs use a shorter version, so check what your program lists. Give yourself time to set up before your start time.

The RACGP National Entry Assessment costs A$190 and is non-refundable, according to the RACGP (checked 13 Sep 2026). University sittings are paid to Acuity Insights, and the fee depends on the program. Our Casper test Australia guide quotes each fee a university publishes, with its source.

Acuity Insights, a third-party provider, delivers the assessment online as its Casper Test, and you book and pay through your Acuity Insights account. When you book, you'll need your Australian or New Zealand medical registration number. The RACGP sets a booking window before each group of sittings. When we last checked, on 13 Sep 2026, the RACGP hadn't published 2027 dates.

Practise under the real time limits, then look closely at what was weak in each answer. Memorised scripts tend to sound rehearsed, so work on your reasoning instead. For the typed section, we suggest typing at least 60 words per minute (WPM), and 80 or more gives you time to think. At 60 WPM, that's about 195 words across both answers in a typed scenario. It's the online situational judgement test that eligible doctors sit when they apply to GP training through the RACGP. The RACGP calls it the National Entry Assessment, and Acuity Insights, the company that delivers it, calls it the Casper Test. It tests how you handle professional and interpersonal situations, not clinical knowledge.

The RACGP set its 2026 sittings in March, May and August. The last listed sitting is Wed 26 Aug 2026. When we last checked, on 13 Sep 2026, the RACGP hadn't published 2027 dates. Universities set their own Casper sittings, and our Casper test Australia guide lists them with sources.

The RACGP, ACRRM and the Department of Health don't publish annual applicant numbers, so there's no exact figure. What is published is the number of training places. For the 2027 intake, that's up to 1,694 through the RACGP and up to 374 Rural Generalist places through ACRRM. Not every applicant gets an offer, so it pays to know where your answers are weak before you sit.

The RACGP (Royal Australian College of General Practitioners) runs 3 to 4 years of full-time training in metro or rural settings. It has up to 1,694 places for 2027. ACRRM (Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine) runs a 4-year program in rural settings, with up to 374 Rural Generalist places for 2027. Both pathways lead to GP Fellowship. The National Entry Assessment is the RACGP's assessment, so check ACRRM's own selection process if you're applying there.

A situational judgement test puts you in realistic scenarios and asks what you'd do and why. It measures judgement, empathy and professional values rather than knowledge. Medical selection uses them too, including Australian GP training. Casper is an open-response situational judgement test, so you give your own answer instead of picking from options.

Casper looks at personal and professional qualities rather than knowledge. Our guides group them into nine: collaboration, communication, empathy, fairness, ethics, self-awareness, resilience, problem-solving and motivation. There's no single correct answer. Raters look at how thoughtfully you handle the people and the dilemma in front of you.

The standard test has two sections. First come 4 video scenarios, each with 2 questions and 1 minute to record each answer. Then come 7 typed scenarios, each showing 2 questions on one page, with 3 minutes 30 seconds to answer both. That's 22 questions in all. Some Australian teacher education programs use a shorter version.

Acuity Insights scores Casper and reports your result to you as a quartile, from Q1 (lowest) to Q4 (highest). Acuity sends your Casper test results to the programs you've chosen about 2 to 3 weeks after your test. Your quartile score is available about 4 to 5 weeks after the test. Each program decides how to use your result, and the RACGP explains its own approach on its assessment page.

Q1 answers typically jump straight to action, use empty buzzwords like 'non-judgmental' and 'empathetic' without demonstrating them, and sound robotic. Q4 answers lead with genuine empathy and acknowledge how complex the situation is. They normalise the person's difficulty and deal with the human side first, then offer practical support. The key difference is that Q4 shows empathy instead of telling the rater you're empathetic.
